⚠️ Save Indigo Farms – Carolina Bays Parkway Extension ⚠️

A six-generation family farm, Indigo Farms, is in danger of being lost forever due to the Hwy 31 (Carolina Bays Parkway) Extension.

The official Environmental Impact Assessment falsely claims that “0 farms are impacted.” This is not true. Indigo Farms will lose its farm market, multiple homes, and fields if this project proceeds as planned.

About Indigo Farms

Indigo Farms has been in the Bellamy family since 1766. It is a Century Farm with deep roots in Horry County, SC, and Brunswick County, NC. The farm preserves Native American travel routes, early indigo history, and offers a place where generations have learned about farming, food, and family heritage.

The farm is run today by Sam and Sarah Bellamy, along with their daughter Sallie, representing the 6th generation. Fields for strawberries, blueberries, and other crops have been carefully managed for decades and serve as a vital source of food and education for the community.

What the Hwy 31 Plan Would Destroy

  • The farm market where cider is pressed and harvests are stored.
  • Homes of Sam and Sarah Bellamy, and potentially Sallie’s home.
  • The young blueberry field intended for future pick-your-own.
  • The strawberry field, uniquely suited to strawberries and protected from deer.
  • Road access to smaller fields and the swamp field.

What We’re Asking

  • Modify or remove the Hwy 57/Hickman Road connection at the NC/SC state line (there is already a connection at Hwy 111 nearby).
  • Acknowledge that Indigo Farms is impacted in the Environmental Assessment.

Subject: Protect Indigo Farms from Hwy 31 Extension

Dear [Official’s Name],

I am writing as a concerned constituent regarding the Carolina Bays Parkway Extension (Highway 31). The current Environmental Impact Assessment states that no farms are impacted, yet Indigo Farms—a six-generation Century Farm located on the SC/NC border—is directly in the path of the proposed route.

If built as planned, this project would displace the farm market, multiple homes, strawberry and blueberry fields, and the very heart of Indigo Farms. This is a devastating loss for our community and contradicts the “0 farms impacted” claim in the assessment.

I respectfully request that you:

  • Ensure Indigo Farms is formally acknowledged as impacted in the assessment.
  • Modify or remove the Highway 57/Hickman Road connection to reduce the farm’s destruction.

Indigo Farms is more than a business; it is a community resource, an educational space, and a vital link to our agricultural and cultural heritage. Please help us protect it.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
[Your City/County]

Quick Blurbs for Public Input

Option 1: Indigo Farms is clearly impacted by the Carolina Bays Parkway Extension, despite the Environmental Impact Assessment stating “0 farms.” Please acknowledge this and adjust the Highway 57/Hickman Road connection to spare the farm.

Option 2: Indigo Farms is a six-generation family farm providing food, education, and community value. Please protect it by modifying the proposed route and correcting the false claim that no farms are affected.

Option 3: Losing Indigo Farms would mean losing homes, markets, and decades of farming heritage. Please stand with our community and change the Hwy 31 plan to save the farm.
