Do Healthy Dogs Need Joint Supplements? What the Science Says About Keeping Dogs Moving

If you own a dog long enough, there comes a point when you begin watching movement differently.

Maybe getting up from a nap takes an extra second. Maybe the leap onto the couch becomes a climb. The dog who once pulled you through a three-mile walk is still enthusiastic but a little slower the next morning.

For many owners, that’s when advertisements for canine joint supplements suddenly become much more interesting.

That is what sent us down this particular rabbit hole.

One product that appears frequently in social-media advertising is Dog Is Human MULTIFLEX, a premium daily joint supplement containing glucosamine, MSM, chondroitin, bone broth, Boswellia serrata and UC-II collagen.

But instead of asking whether that particular product is “good” or “bad,” we decided to ask a much bigger question:

What does the evidence actually tell us about keeping our dogs’ joints healthy as they age—and if we decide to use a supplement, what should we be looking for?

The answer turns out to involve much more than anything sold in a packet.

First, the most important “joint supplement” may not be a supplement at all

Before comparing bottles and ingredient labels, there is something every dog owner should know.

One of the strongest pieces of evidence we have for protecting canine joints involves keeping dogs lean throughout their lives.

A remarkable long-term study followed 48 Labrador Retrievers. Dogs were paired with littermates, with one dog receiving 25% less of the same food than its paired littermate.

Researchers followed them for years.

The median age at which hip osteoarthritis was first detected was approximately 6 years in the control-fed dogs and 12 years in the restricted-fed dogs. The leaner group developed hip osteoarthritis later and with less severity.

That does not mean owners should arbitrarily cut their dog’s food by 25%. Calorie needs vary enormously among dogs.

The important lesson is the relationship between healthy body condition and joint health.

The American Animal Hospital Association considers weight optimization critically important in chronic pain management. Excess fat isn’t merely extra weight for joints to carry. Adipose tissue is biologically active and produces inflammatory signaling molecules. AAHA cites veterinary evidence supporting lean body condition throughout life as a way of reducing osteoarthritis progression.

So before spending $50 or $60 every month on a joint supplement, one of the most consequential things an owner can do is free:

Keep the dog at an appropriate, lean body condition.

Movement matters, too

Joint health isn’t simply about reducing wear and tear by preventing a dog from moving.

Dogs need movement.

Appropriate regular activity helps maintain muscle, strength, coordination and mobility. For dogs with chronic musculoskeletal pain, AAHA includes encouraging activity and environmental modification alongside weight management and nutritional approaches as important non-drug interventions.

The practical lesson for a healthy dog is consistency.

A dog that spends five days largely sedentary and then suddenly undertakes an enormous weekend adventure isn’t necessarily following an ideal conditioning program. Regular walking and age-appropriate exercise maintain the muscles that support the skeleton.

For coastal dogs, swimming can also provide exercise with relatively little joint impact—although ocean conditions, currents, temperature and the individual dog’s swimming ability obviously matter.

And don’t overlook simple things.

Overgrown nails can affect how a dog places its feet. Slippery floors can become increasingly difficult for older dogs. Rugs and runners can provide traction. Ramps may eventually make more sense than repeatedly jumping from a high vehicle.

Joint health is partly nutrition and medicine, but it is also how the dog lives every day.

Then we get to supplements

The canine joint-supplement aisle is enormous.

You’ll encounter glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM, collagen, turmeric, Boswellia, eggshell membrane, hyaluronic acid, green-lipped mussel, omega-3 fatty acids and numerous proprietary combinations.

The uncomfortable truth is that the evidence behind them is not equally strong.

Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine makes an important point: pet supplements aren’t regulated like medications, products may not always contain precisely what their labels claim, and there is no universally accepted daily dosage for many popular joint ingredients. Cornell recommends considering veterinarian-recommended manufacturers or products carrying the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) quality seal.

That makes two questions important:

Does the ingredient work?

And:

Does this particular product actually contain a meaningful, reliable amount of it?

Those aren’t necessarily the same question.

The surprise winner: omega-3 fatty acids

If someone asked us which nutritional joint ingredient currently has the strongest overall evidence, the answer probably isn’t the one most consumers expect.

It’s omega-3 fatty acids—particularly the marine omega-3s EPA and DHA.

A major 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 57 articles encompassing 72 trials of nutritional products in dogs and cats with osteoarthritis.

Omega-3-enriched diets and omega-3 supplements demonstrated the clearest clinical analgesic efficacy among the nutraceutical categories examined.

AAHA reaches a similar conclusion. Its pain-management guidelines state that evidence supporting nutraceuticals is generally low except for omega-3 fatty acids in dogs.

Cornell likewise describes fish-oil omega-3 fatty acids as the joint supplement currently having the most support in the literature.

That doesn’t mean every dog needs a fish-oil capsule.

Fish oil contains calories, dosage matters, product concentration varies considerably, and dogs with particular health conditions may have reasons not to receive it. This is something worth discussing with a veterinarian rather than simply pouring an arbitrary amount over dinner.

But when comparing joint products, EPA and DHA deserve attention.

Look for the actual EPA and DHA content rather than being impressed by a large number saying only “fish oil.”

What about glucosamine and chondroitin?

These may be the most famous joint-supplement ingredients of all.

Their reputation, however, is stronger than the modern evidence.

The 2022 systematic review found a pronounced lack of meaningful analgesic efficacy from glucosamine/chondroitin products in dogs and cats with osteoarthritis.

That doesn’t prove that every glucosamine-containing product is useless. Combination products contain other active compounds, formulations differ, and owners frequently report improvement.

It does mean that we shouldn’t assume a joint supplement is excellent simply because GLUCOSAMINE appears in giant letters on the package.

The ingredient list has to be considered as a whole.

UC-II is particularly interesting

Undenatured type-II collagen, usually seen as UC-II, deserves a closer look.

A randomized prospective study involving 60 dogs with osteoarthritis compared 40 mg daily UC-II with the veterinary anti-inflammatory drug robenacoxib over 30 days. Both groups showed improvements in mobility measures during the study.

More recently, researchers conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover study examining a supplement combining 40 mg UC-II with Boswellia serrata in dogs with mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis. The formulation also contained omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin E.

This doesn’t establish UC-II as a miracle treatment, and studies of dogs already experiencing osteoarthritis cannot automatically prove that supplementation will prevent disease in a young healthy dog.

But compared with many ingredients appearing on pet-supplement labels, UC-II has enough canine research to make it genuinely interesting.

Boswellia, MSM and the rest

Boswellia serrata is a plant extract with anti-inflammatory properties and appears increasingly often in sophisticated joint formulations. The UC-II/Boswellia trial above provides some canine evidence for a combination containing it, although combination studies make it difficult to determine exactly how much benefit belongs to each ingredient individually.

MSM—methylsulfonylmethane—is another extremely common component of joint supplements.

Other products use avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU), eggshell membrane, turmeric, green tea extracts, hyaluronic acid or green-lipped mussel.

Cornell lists all of these among ingredients currently encountered in canine joint supplements and notes research supporting several approaches, including ASU, green-lipped mussel and UC-II.

This brings us back to the advertisement that started our investigation.

Dog Is Human MULTIFLEX

Dog Is Human’s MULTIFLEX contains, per full daily packet:

Glucosamine HCl — 800 mg
MSM — 300 mg
Chondroitin sulfate — 200 mg
Bovine bone broth — 150 mg
Boswellia serrata extract standardized to 30% AKBA — 60 mg
UC-II collagen — 40 mg

Beef liver is used as an inactive ingredient.

There are things here we like.

First, Dog Is Human tells consumers how much of each active ingredient they’re getting.

Second, that 40 mg UC-II catches our attention because 40 mg is also the quantity used in published canine UC-II research. That doesn’t mean MULTIFLEX itself has been proven by those trials—the formulations aren’t identical—but it is a more meaningful observation than simply saying an ingredient is “science backed.”

Third, the Boswellia is standardized to 30% AKBA, providing more information than simply listing an unspecified quantity of Boswellia powder.

The product is also remarkably convenient: one measured packet a day.

That convenience is part of what you’re paying for.

At the time we researched it, the company listed MULTIFLEX at $58 for 30 packets as a one-time purchase and $49 with subscription, before temporary promotions.

Dog Is Human reports that in a 100-consumer study after 90 days, 93% noticed their dogs moving more easily and 98% noticed increased activity.

Those numbers are certainly interesting.

But they need context.

A consumer study based on owners’ observations is not equivalent to a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled clinical trial.

That doesn’t mean the owners didn’t see improvement. It simply means we shouldn’t present those percentages as though they establish clinical efficacy of the finished product.

That’s an important distinction we would make for any manufacturer.

Dog Is Human isn’t alone

MULTIFLEX isn’t the only sophisticated joint product available.

In fact, looking at its competitors illustrates just how differently manufacturers approach canine joint health.

Dasuquin Advanced

Nutramax’s Dasuquin Advanced is probably one of the most relevant comparisons.

Depending on formulation, its ingredients include glucosamine, chondroitin, ASU, Boswellia serrata, MSM, turmeric, green-tea extract, alpha-lipoic acid, manganese and omega-3 fatty acids. An Advanced formulation with eggshell membrane is also available.

Notice what’s happening here.

Dog Is Human includes UC-II and bone broth.

Dasuquin instead emphasizes its glucosamine/chondroitin/ASU combination while adding several other compounds.

Neither label can be reduced to “joint supplement.”

They’re different strategies.

Nutramax also has a long history in veterinary supplements, and Cornell specifically mentions Dasuquin in its discussion of commonly recommended joint-support approaches.

Virbac MOVOFLEX Advanced

MOVOFLEX Advanced takes yet another route.

Virbac uses ingredients including eggshell membrane, Boswellia, astaxanthin and hyaluronic acid, with the Advanced formulation adding krill as an omega-3 source and additional low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid.

That makes MOVOFLEX especially useful for illustrating something consumers often miss:

There is no single universally accepted recipe for a canine joint supplement.

Major veterinary-health companies are pursuing different combinations based on different proposed mechanisms.

Where was this stuff actually made?

This is a question we think consumers should ask more often.

“Made in America” and “ingredients sourced in America” do not mean the same thing.

Dog Is Human states that MULTIFLEX is made in Vermont, is third-party tested and uses human-grade ingredients.

What we have not found publicly disclosed with comparable specificity is the country of origin for every individual MULTIFLEX ingredient.

That’s not an accusation. It simply means we cannot tell you something the manufacturer hasn’t clearly documented publicly.

Nutramax states explicitly that Dasuquin Advanced is manufactured in the United States with globally sourced ingredients and says the product undergoes extensive quality inspections.

Virbac similarly states that MOVOFLEX Advanced is made in the United States using U.S. and globally sourced ingredients. Virbac goes further with one ingredient, identifying the krill used in MOVOFLEX Advanced as sustainably sourced Antarctic krill.

We would like to see more supplement manufacturers provide that level of traceability.

If the glucosamine originates in China, say China.

If the chondroitin comes from cattle in the United States, say so.

If the collagen comes from a European supplier, tell us.

Global sourcing isn’t inherently bad. Excellent pharmaceutical and nutritional ingredients are manufactured all over the world.

Transparency is the issue.

Consumers should be able to distinguish where a product is packaged from where its important ingredients actually originate.

So which joint supplement should a healthy dog take?

Here is where we’re going to disappoint anyone hoping for a simple winner.

We don’t think the evidence supports declaring one supplement something every healthy dog needs.

And that’s actually good news.

An owner who cannot afford $50 or $60 every month hasn’t failed their dog.

For a healthy dog, the foundation is still remarkably unglamorous:

Keep the dog lean.
Feed a nutritionally complete diet.
Exercise regularly.
Maintain muscle.
Keep nails and feet healthy.
Provide traction as the dog ages.
Watch for changes in gait and mobility.
Investigate persistent limping rather than dismissing it as “getting old.”

Then nutritional supplementation becomes another possible layer rather than the foundation holding everything up.

If adding nutritional joint support, omega-3 EPA/DHA deserves particularly serious consideration because its evidence base is stronger than that of many traditional joint nutraceuticals.

UC-II is another ingredient we find interesting based on the canine research currently available.

And combination products such as MULTIFLEX, Dasuquin Advanced and MOVOFLEX Advanced provide convenient ways to obtain several potentially useful compounds without assembling a cabinet full of individual supplements.

Healthy aging and treating disease are different questions

This distinction may be the most important one in this entire article.

A healthy seven-year-old dog whose owner wants to support long-term mobility is not the same thing as a ten-year-old dog struggling to stand up.

And neither is the same as a dog with a cruciate ligament injury, hip dysplasia, spinal disease or another orthopedic condition.

A supplement shouldn’t become a way of avoiding a diagnosis.

If a dog begins limping, repeatedly shifts weight from one leg, has trouble rising, suddenly stops jumping, hesitates on stairs, becomes unusually reluctant to exercise or displays a meaningful change in gait, that’s a reason to investigate why.

Once osteoarthritis or another painful orthopedic condition exists, modern management can involve weight management, appropriate activity, rehabilitation, environmental changes, nutrition, medications and sometimes surgery.

AAHA’s guidelines explicitly describe chronic pain management as multimodal rather than relying upon a single intervention.

A scoop of powder cannot repair a torn ligament.

And a supplement shouldn’t be expected to do the job of appropriate veterinary treatment.

Our verdict

After digging into this subject, we don’t think Dog Is Human MULTIFLEX deserves either extreme commonly found on the internet.

We wouldn’t call it a miracle.

We wouldn’t call it snake oil either.

It is a thoughtfully assembled premium joint supplement containing several established joint-support ingredients, including two—UC-II and Boswellia—that make the formulation more interesting than a basic glucosamine/chondroitin chew.

Dog Is Human also deserves credit for publishing the quantities of its active ingredients, manufacturing the finished product in Vermont and reporting third-party testing.

Its competitors deserve credit where they earn it as well.

Nutramax brings decades of veterinary-market experience, substantial quality-control infrastructure and a different multi-ingredient approach with Dasuquin Advanced.

Virbac’s MOVOFLEX Advanced offers another credible formulation and provides unusually useful sourcing information for components such as its Antarctic krill.

What we cannot say from the evidence is that every healthy dog needs any one of these products—or that buying the most expensive supplement is the best thing an owner can do for a dog’s joints.

The strongest lesson we found costs considerably less:

Keep them lean. Keep them moving. Keep them strong. Pay attention when their movement changes.

Then, if you and your veterinarian decide nutritional joint support makes sense, look beyond the photograph of the happy dog on the package.

Read the active ingredients.

Read the amounts.

Look for EPA and DHA.

Investigate ingredients such as UC-II.

Look at who manufactured it.

Ask where the ingredients came from.

Look for meaningful quality-control and independent-testing information.

And remember that “clinically studied ingredients” and “this finished product has been clinically proven” are two very different statements.

Our dogs can’t read supplement labels.

That’s our job.

And when we’re making decisions intended to keep them walking beside us for as many years as possible, they deserve more than good advertising.
